Shane Van Gisbergen stunned the NASCAR world when he won the inaugural Grant Park 165 last year in his Cup Series debut. He's the favorite across our best sports betting sites to defend his crown in Sunday's race at the Chicago Street Course, which begins at 4:30 p.m. ET on NBC.

Van Gisbergen leads this year's Grant Park 165 odds and expert picks after winning last year as a 100/1 long shot. But pole-sitter Kyle Larson - a co-favorite by the latest NASCAR Cup Series championship odds - isn't far behind heading into Sunday's race.

Chicago Street Course track analysis

The Chicago Street Course, hosting NASCAR's first and only street race, is a unique and arguably the most challenging track on the Cup Series circuit.

The 2.2-mile course in downtown Chicago, with its 12 sharp turns, including seven 90-degree angles, presents a challenging layout for drivers. The narrow, single-groove track makes overtaking difficult, adding to the complexity of the race.

One wrong turn is liable to end in a head-on collision with the concrete walls that form the boundaries of this track. That left many drivers tentative to build speed or seize passing opportunities in last year's debut ... except for those like Van Gisbergen with familiarity in street racing.

Weather forecast for Chicago Street Race

Last year's Grant Park 165 was plagued by hours of rain delays that eventually shortened the inaugural Chicago Street Race to just 75 of 100 laps.

That doesn't look to be an issue for this year's race. Entering the weekend, the weather forecast for Chicago called for a high of 83 degrees and a low of 71 degrees on Sunday afternoon, per AccuWeather.com.

Crucially, there's only a 25% chance of rain in the area and a 6% chance of thunderstorms. We could see some scattered showers in the early afternoon before the green flag drops, but it likely won't be enough to have a significant impact on this race.

Chicago Street Race predictions, race preview

Picks made Friday at 5 p.m. ET prior to practice or qualifying. Odds listed here may vary from current prices.

All eyes are on Shane Van Gisbergen (+200) after his epic victory last year, when the former Supercars champion charged through the field in the final few laps to become the first driver in 60 years to win a points race in his debut.

Van Gisbergen has excelled on road-course races in the Xfinity Series, winning two of three with a late crash at Austin derailing a would-be sweep on those courses. Still, it's tough for me to lay such short odds on a driver with inferior tech - he's backed by Kaulig Racing this time around - in a field that should be much more seasoned for Round 2 at Chicago.

To that point, Christopher Bell (+1000) has piloted the fastest car in the field over the last six weeks, winning two races with a dominant showing last week at Nashville before spinning out in the final stage.

Bell also finished second at the Circuit of the Americas in March and almost certainly would have won that race if it were just a few laps longer. He was similarly dominant in last year's rain-shortened Grant Park 165, which saw the No. 20 car win both stages and lead a race-high 37 laps before late trouble in wet conditions.

At this point, Bell feels like an auto-bet in every race if our best sportsbooks are going to offer odds like what FanDuel is for this one. He's a key reason I like Toyota to win the race (+210) with Bell, Tyler Reddick (+950), Ty Gibbs (+850), and Martin Truex Jr. (+4500) - all strong road-course racers - rolled into a single prop bet.

Looking outside of Toyota, Ross Chastain (+7000) is an aggressive driver whose skill set plays well to tighter confines like a street race. He's finished in the top 10 in nearly two-thirds of his road-course races over the last two seasons, including three straight entering Sunday after a fifth-place showing at Sonoma.

Chastain said this week he never felt comfortable in last year's Chicago debut, when he finished 22nd, but he's been vocal about soliciting advice from Van Gisbergen after the New Zealander won this race with Trackhouse Racing last year. Chastain says he's also relied a lot more on simulator data - especially Van Gisbergen's - to build confidence hugging the walls this time around.

If Trackhouse rolls out the SVG package for its best road course racer this weekend, why couldn't Chastain pull off a similar upset? I love his chances of scoring another top-10 finish (+250) with an outside shot at winning the whole thing.

Also, how can you not like Justin Haley (+10000) at these long-shot odds? He worked his way from 37th to the lead last year, pacing the field for 23 total laps and eventually finishing second behind SVG. I'm not holding my breath on a repeat performance, but it feels like borderline malpractice to offer such long odds on him to win and to finish in the top 10 (+400).
