The Aces may have won the championship duel between these teams last October, but it's hard to argue they've been the better squad this season.
After a puzzling 6-6 start featuring a 90-82 home loss to the Liberty, Las Vegas ripped off 10 wins in its next 11 games to regain control of the club's playoff fate. But then it delivered a dud against the Chicago Sky before sending four players overseas for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
That stretch was emblematic of this entire season for the Aces, who haven't quite found even footing after back-to-back title runs. Even with A'ja Wilson playing at a historic level, her supporting cast has been struggling to live up to the hype, especially in big matchups.
New York playing like a title contender
Meanwhile, the Liberty already look like a well-oiled machine in their Olympic return. I thought they might start to slow after that extended break, but the group proved me wrong with a jaw-dropping 103-68 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks. It was their fifth straight triumph and third 35-plus-point win this season, setting a new WNBA record.
New York ranks first in net rating (+12.9). That's nearly double Las Vegas' mark (+6.8), and the Liberty have recorded an 18-point average margin of victory over their last four outings. That sort of blowout shouldn't happen again Saturday, though the Liberty are the better and more complete group at this point in the season.
That may change between now and October, but I'd still rather take the points with a team that always seems to deliver on national TV.
