Two teams fighting for a playoff position square off tonight when the Atlanta Dream host the Golden State Valkyries at 7:30 p.m. ET (WNBA League Pass) from Gateway Center Arena in College Park, Ga. Neither team entered the season as a serious WNBA championship odds contender, but our Valkyries vs. Dream predictions highlight why their defenses have helped them climb the board.

While Rhyne Howard (upper body) remains day-to-day for the Dream, Atlanta still has far more scoring talent than the Valkyries. In what should be a defensive battle, Karl Smesko's wide-open offense should ultimately be the difference - Atlanta is No. 4 in offensive rating (108.3). With both Allisha Gray's outside scoring and Brionna Jones on the inside, the Dream should be able to push Golden State's defense enough for the win. I have Atlanta taking this 78-74 as part of our Valkyries vs. Dream prediction.

Not only is Golden State a first-year expansion team, but it's arguably the only team in the WNBA lacking a true face of the franchise. And yet, the Valkyries are one of just six teams above .500 so far this season. So, how has Natalie Nakase's team done it? By playing feisty defense.

Golden State is No. 2 in defensive rating (99.9), gives up the second-fewest points per game (77.5), and allows the lowest field-goal percentage in the W (39.7%). Kayla Thornton (1.1) and Veronica Burton (0.8) both rank top 20 in the league in defensive win shares, while Monique Billing (96.5), Temi Fagbenle (97.6), and Thornton (97.8) are all top 10 in defensive rating.

However, Golden State's offense is as bad as its defense is good. It's bottom four in points per game (79), rating (101.8), and field-goal percentage (40.2%). That sets Atlanta up well to shut it down, with the Dream allowing the third-fewest points per game in the league (78.6). The Valkyries have the best Under record in the WNBA at 11-6 for a reason, which is why I love the Under for my Valkyries vs. Dream prediction.

Whether Howard plays or not shouldn't impact Gray hitting the Over here. While she's been in a scoring slump, the two-time All-Star has made up for it by impacting the game in other ways. Gray, who's averaging 9.8 rebounds and assists per game this season, has gone Over 9.5 rebounds and assists in three straight games.

During that stretch, Gray is averaging 9.3 boards and 4.7 apples per game. With Golden State ranking outside the top four in both rebounds allowed (34.5) and assists allowed (18.9) per game, Gray should be able to continue running up her rebounds and assists numbers.
