Two bitter SEC rivals will clash in the regular-season finale as the Auburn Tigers host the Alabama Crimson Tide. Both teams sit high in the March Madness odds.

Auburn is coming off its worst loss of the season, an 83-72 road defeat at Texas A&M. But the Tigers are 2-0 against the spread after a loss, beating Richmond by 44 as 29-point favorites and Vanderbilt by 12 as 8.5-point favorites.

Do not underestimate the importance of Auburn getting an extra day of rest to prepare for this matchup, especially considering the gauntlet that Alabama has been enduring (at Tennessee, home to Florida, at Auburn over a seven-day span).

Auburn registered six players in double figures during the first matchup between these teams this season. The Tigers also used their length and athleticism to own a major edge from the 3-point line. Auburn shot 40% from beyond the arc, while Alabama made just 5 of 26 attempts (19.2%).

In Auburn’s last home game, a 106-76 win over Ole Miss, it scored 1.49 points per possession. That was its best offensive performance since the 1996-97 season, according to KenPom.

Auburn’s +36.46 KenPom net rating is the third-best ever during the history of the KenPom database. I therefore expect the Tigers’ talent advantage to once again win out in this rematch, especially on their home floor against a weary Alabama team.

Auburn’s defense will be a great foil to Alabama’s D-I leading scoring offense (91.1 points per game).

The Tigers entered the first matchup with the Crimson Tide ranking in the second percentile in catch-and-shoot rate allowed. Meanwhile, Alabama’s offense ranked in the 98th percentile in that metric offensively.

Sears has been living up to his All-American hype lately while scoring 21-plus points in five consecutive games and averaging 28 points per game during that span.

Auburn held Sears to 18 points in the first matchup this season despite the Crimson Tide point guard getting to the free throw line 11 times. 

Sears has shot 25% or worse from 3-point range in three of the last eight games, and I expect Auburn’s length (it ranks 31st in Division I average height) will bother the guard once again.
