The NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 action begins tonight with the No. 2 seed Alabama Crimson Tide (27-8) battling the No. 6 seed BYU Cougars (26-9). Tipoff from Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., is set for 7:09 p.m. ET (CBS) as East Region play resumes.

These seem like relatively steep odds to back Demin to make one or zero 3-pointers, something he has done in just three of the previous seven games. 

But for as many flaws as Alabama’s defense has, one thing it prides itself on is running teams off the 3-point line. The Crimson Tide allow just 34.7% of their opponent’s field goal attempts to come from beyond the arc, which ranks 47th among D-I teams.

🔥 Mark Sears Under 4.5 assists ⭐⭐⭐

Alabama assisted on 15 of 29 made field goals in its win over Saint Mary’s. And the Crimson Tide did not necessarily need to zip the ball around on offense, as they scored 35 of their 42 first-half points on possessions with two or fewer passes.

Sears has the ball in his hands a lot, ranking 11th in SEC play in percentage of his team’s possession rate and third in assist rate. But he also has four or fewer assists in three of the last four games and should take the lion’s share of the shots against a Cougars defense that allows opponents to shoot 35% from beyond the arc.

🔥 Grant Nelson Under 11.5 points ⭐⭐

BYU has sometimes struggled to defend the perimeter and allows opponents to shoot 35% from beyond the arc. The Cougars have allowed 10 or more 3-pointers to each of their previous five opponents, which will likely have Nate Oats’ squad licking their chops.

Nelson has made at least one 3-pointer in four consecutive games that he has played at least 10 minutes. But he also is shooting just 27.3% from beyond the arc on the season. Oats is a very analytically driven head coach, so I expect his team to bomb way more than the 28 3-pointers it averages on the season. 

That would mean Nelson’s point total ceiling is much lower, and I expect him to score 10 or fewer points for the eighth time in the last 11 games. Caesars has the best total for Under backers, as FanDuel is a point lower at 10.5.
