I’m not a believer in this year’s UConn squad, but head coach Dan Hurley won’t go down without a fight. The Huskies won and covered against Oklahoma in the first round and have too much tournament experience to warrant being a double-digit underdog to Florida.
To be clear, the Gators are a much better team. Since February 1, Florida is impressively No. 3 in T-Rank behind its second-ranked offense. UConn ranks a dreadful 35th with both its offense and defense outside the top 20. However, one stat stands out for UConn: tempo.
Over this stretch, the Huskies have been one of the slowest teams in the country, ranking 332nd nationally in pace. If you’re a less efficient team, the best way to win is to limit total possessions, thereby reducing the significance of your net efficiency disadvantage.
