The Big East Conference’s only two AP-ranked teams clash in the regular-season finale as the Marquette Golden Eagles host the St. John’s Red Storm.

Here's why I'm betting on Marquette to cover the spread (-2.5) while targeting Kam Jones Over 5.5 assists as my best player prop bet pick for today:

Marquette is just 4-5 in Big East play after starting the season having won nine of its first 10 Big East games. But only one of those losses in that recent stretch have come at home, and the Golden Eagles have averaged 81 points in their last two home games. 

Marquette lost 70-64 at St. John’s on Feb. 4, but kept the game close despite 13 fewer free-throw attempts. The Golden Eagles forced the Red Storm into 14 turnovers, and Marquette made eight 3-pointers against the vaunted Red Storm defense.

St. John’s has been lauded as a poor shooting team all year. 

While that shooting has experienced some improvement in the last month with eight or more 3-pointers against Villanova, DePaul, and UConn, Marquette held the Red Storm to 18.8% from beyond the arc in the first matchup.

These teams are similarly structured on the defensive end, employing tons of pressure and being active in the gaps and passing lanes. 

If Shaka Smart’s team continues to employ the strategy of trading 2-point baskets for threes, Marquette should have enough to earn this victory, especially if it does a better job of keeping St. John’s off the free throw line.

🔥 Kam Jones Over 5.5 assists ⭐⭐⭐

In the first meeting against St. John’s, Kam Jones went 1-for-5 from 3-point range. He also has gone 0-for-10 in the last two games combined from beyond the arc.

Because of that shooting slump, I look for Jones to get his teammates more involved, given how much the ball was in his hands in the first matchup against the Red Storm. Jones controlled 40% of the team’s possession rate against St. John’s, his second-highest usage in a game all season.

He has the highest assist rate (38%) in conference play and ranks ninth in that metric nationally. Thus, I am backing Jones to record six-plus assists for the fourth time in the last five games, and expect him to improve significantly from the one assist he had in the first matchup.

The -114 odds at FanDuel are a steal compared to the -140 price at bet365, which carry a 58.33% implied probability.
