Home court advantage was king in their two head-to-head meetings, with Florida winning by 30 at the O'Dome, only to lose by 20 at Knoxville in the rematch.
In the first meeting, Tennessee shot an abysmal 4-for-29 from 3-point range as Gators head coach Todd Golden masterfully executed a game plan that forced the Volunteers’ secondary options to beat them.
More concerning for Tennessee in that matchup was the season-high 1.15 points per possession it allowed off the dribble, per hoop-explorer. And the Gators also burned Tennessee’s defense for a season-high 18 transition points.
I called for Tennessee’s outright upset of Auburn in the semifinals, citing the pro-Nashville crowd to spur it on. But Florida is playing at a much higher level, and holding Alabama to 1.05 points per possession yesterday shouldn’t go unnoticed. Call this wager a double-down from our ATS pick, but if Florida is to cover the spread, it likely has to limit the Volunteers' leading scorer, Chaz Lanier.
Lanier scored 19 points in Tennessee’s home win over Florida, but the Gators held him to 10 in the first meeting.
In that game in Gainesville, the Gators stuck to Lanier like glue on all of Tennessee’s pindown screens, and Lanier didn’t score a single point from ball-screen action in six attempts. Lanier has made multiple 3-pointers in eight consecutive games and has scored 23 or more points in two of the previous three.
But Florida ranks seventh in the country in adjusted defensive efficiency and is the league’s best 2-point percentage defense. I expect the Gators will throw multiple bodies at Lanier and make him work for everything he gets.
