Expectations for the Arizona Cardinals are low after their 4-13 season in 2022, and it's not hard to see why. The Cardinals will rely on Josh Dobbs at quarterback to start their 2023 season due to Kyler Murray's prolonged absence. Dobbs performed decently for the Tennessee Titans last year but was unable to secure victories in his two starts.
In Week 1, they face the Washington Commanders, a team with much more excitement surrounding their quarterback situation. Sam Howell is taking the helm, and despite playing only one game in 2022, there are high expectations for the young quarterback from North Carolina. The storyline for this game is simple when making your NFL best bets for Week 1. The Commanders have a decent offense going against a terrible defense, while the Cardinals have a very bad offense going against a very good defense. When you add it all up, the Commanders are the easy pick even with the spread hitting the key number.
Washington allowed just 20.2 points per game last season, an NFL seventh-best. In Dobbs' two starts in 2022, Tennessee averaged just 14.5 PPG.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals’ defense allowed 26.4 PPG last year, the league's second-worst mark. Even though Howell will go through some growing pains under center, there's no reason he can't take advantage of a weak defense with all the weapons he has.
