Two of the NFL’s most promising young quarterbacks get their first taste of the playoffs Saturday night when Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers visit Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Chargers won four of their final five regular-season games to claim their first playoff berth since 2018, while the Jags clinched the AFC South title last week with a dramatic 20-16 victory over Tennesee. It was Jacksonville’s fifth straight win and seventh in its last nine.

The Chargers opened as one-point favorites and despite the news that wideout Mike Williams has been ruled out, the Bolts remain favored at -2.5. L.A. is getting 46% of the bets on the spread, while 54% of bettors support the underdog Jaguars.

The total opened at 47 and has ticked up to 47.5 at most sportsbooks. The Over is still drawing 52% of the action.

Both of these defenses have played a big role in their teams’ strong finishes to the regular season. The Chargers have held four of their last five opponents to 17 points or less while Jacksonville gave up just 22 points in its final three games. However, the weak caliber of opposing offenses faced during that stretch has made both teams’ stop units look way better than they really are.

Prior to last week’s meaningless 31-28 loss in Denver, the Chargers gave up an average of 11 points in victories over the Los Angeles Rams, Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans, and Miami Dolphins - teams that have struggled badly to put up points in the past month. Meanwhile, Jacksonville’s success on defense came in two games against the Ryan Tannehill-less Titans, the Houston Texans, and the New York Jets.

In the Jags’ other four most recent games, they were gashed for 40 points by Detroit, gave up 34 to the Dallas Cowboys and allowed 27 points to both the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs.

When these two teams met in September, Jacksonville hung 38 points on the Chargers’ defense in a 38-10 victory that went Over the total of 45.5. Herbert and the L.A. offense had no difficulty moving the ball through the air, throwing for nearly 300 yards, and should have put up more points if not for two turnovers and a 1-for-3 performance inside the red zone.

In a game where I expect both teams to score in the mid-20s, I’m comfortable making the Over a four-star play up to 49.

The total of 47.5 was the early consensus but has moved to 47 at most of the top sportsbooks. FanDuel is still on 47.5, but the juice is -118 for the Under in that case. That extra half-point of value could be the difference between a push and a loss if this game ends with a score like 27-20 or 24-23.
