Chiefs Postseason Winning Streak: Where Does KC Rank Among NFL's Longest Playoff Streaks?

The focus with Kansas City ahead of the 2025 Super Bowl is rightfully on the possibility of history being made and a Chiefs Super Bowl three-peat.
But along the way to potentially reaching that mountaintop, the Chiefs are poised to join select company in another regard.
Whether it's the regular season, postseason, or by a field goal or a touchdown-plus, the Chiefs just keep winning. And now if they win again for one of your Super Bowl predictions, the Chiefs' postseason winning streak is set to be tied with the longest such playoff run in NFL history.
Chiefs postseason winning streak
Amid a list that features some of the best NFL teams ever assembled, the Chiefs are tied with the Green Bay Packers when Vince Lombardi was at the peak of his powers.
And they're just one playoff victory behind the New England Patriots during the team's first dynastic period under Tom Brady when he rose to prominence.
Team | Years | Wins |
---|---|---|
New England Patriots | 2001-2005 | 10 |
Green Bay Packers | 1961-1967 | 9 |
Kansas City Chiefs | 2023-present | 9 |
Pittsburgh Steelers | 1974-1976 | 7 |
San Francisco 49ers | 1988-1990 | 7 |
Dallas Cowboys | 1992-1994 | 7 |
Denver Broncos | 1997-1998 | 7 |
Here are some other takeaways and observations:
- The Chiefs have already joined the Steelers, 49ers, and Cowboys on that list by making it to at least the conference championship game the next season after winning two straight championships
- The Patriots were the only team listed to have a gap while maintaining their postseason winning streak, as they finished 9-7 and didn't make the playoffs in 2002 following their 2001 championship before taking home titles in 2003 and 2004
- The Broncos failed to reach the postseason after their run of back-to-back championships, with John Elway retiring and Terrell Davis' rapid injury-induced decline beginning the season afterward
- The Packers' run started with two straight NFL championships, which came after the team lost in the championship game to the Philadelphia Eagles in 1960

Chiefs postseason streak: How does it compare?
Comparing eras is challenging, as the style of play and athletic ability has changed several times over during the decades since the Lombardi-led Packers produced their run of dominance. There's also greater competition and more parity during some eras.
Still, the Chiefs aren't as menacing on the scoreboard as some of their dynasty peers.
Much like the 2024-25 version of the Chiefs, there have been few dominant victories for Kansas City throughout its playoff streak. Incredibly, a field goal has decided five games, and a 27-20 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars during the divisional round in 2023 was still within one score. Only a 26-7 trouncing of the Miami Dolphins during the wild-card round in 2024 stands out.
Meanwhile, the history of the Super Bowl started with the Packers throttling the Chiefs 35-10, and they cruised past the Oakland Raiders 33-14 just as easily in Super Bowl 2.

The Patriots flexed their muscle a little more during the club's run to back-to-back championships while recording three 10-plus-point wins. Even more impressively, the Steelers notched four straight such victories during their run, peaking in 1974 when they posted a 13-point average margin of victory en route to winning Super Bowl IX.
But the two most dominant teams of the group are the 49ers and Cowboys. The former was a juggernaut peaking toward the end of Bill Walsh's reign, and the Niners won their playoff games to end the 1989 season by a combined score of 126-16. The Cowboys posted a similar stretch to conclude the 1992 campaign, steamrolling the opposition during the postseason with a combined score of 116-47.
Both this season and previously, the Chiefs have continued to find a way to win, despite not feeling like a buzzsaw team at times. In the end, of course, the result and the pile of wins and championships matter much more than any single-game throttling.
