Rookie quarterback Drake Maye could finally see extended playing time when his New England Patriots host the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET on NFL Network, as we offer our best Eagles vs. Patriots prediction and odds.

New England is favored by 2.5 points to beat Philadelphia, according to our best sports betting sites, which also have the Eagles among the Super Bowl odds favorites entering the 2024 NFL season. We like their chances to pull off the upset in Thursday's exhibition.

I'm a bit surprised to see the Eagles dealing as clear underdogs in this matchup, especially after they held off a Baltimore Ravens team last week that always shows up in the preseason.

Our best sports betting apps likely favor New England here because of the expected roll-out of Maye, as head coach Jerod Mayo has already said the No. 3 pick will "get more reps" than the seven snaps he played in the Patriots' preseason opener.

That isn't necessarily a good thing, as rookie quarterbacks often struggle right away - especially those without experience in a pro-style system. Conversely, Eagles backup Kenny Pickett has multiple years under his belt, and Philly's roster is deeper with more impact players on the second-unit than New England.

Will we see repeat of joint practice?

We've already seen a preview of what's to come Thursday, as these teams faced off in a highly anticipated joint practice on Tuesday.

In short: the Eagles dominated in the 11-on-11 portion of practice, especially when New England had the ball. Maye and Jacoby Brissett combined to finish 18-of-36 with two interceptions, and the Patriots' offensive line was thoroughly outclassed by Philly's deep and talented front seven.

That doesn't mean we'll see the same thing happen on Thursday, but it sure does make a plus-money bet on the moneyline of the better team all the more appealing.
