NFL fans will descend on the familiar Big Game site of New Orleans for Super Bowl 2025, featuring the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles. Kickoff for Chiefs vs. Eagles from the Caesars Superdome is set for 6:30 p.m. ET (FOX) on Sunday, Feb. 9.

Our New Orleans Super Bowl history analysis offers an in-depth look at matchup results and scores from the Crescent City. Our best Super Bowl betting sites list the Chiefs as 1.5-point favorites in Super Bowl 2025 with a total of 49.5. How have previous Super Bowls in New Orleans played out from a betting perspective?

New Orleans Super Bowl history

Super Bowl 59 will be the 11th Super Bowl played in New Orleans. This brings Louisiana's biggest city level with Miami as the most frequent host since the AFL-NFL merger. Only Los Angeles (including Inglewood and Pasadena) comes close, having hosted eight times.

Super Bowl 2025 sees the Big Game return to The Big Easy for the first time in 12 years. There have been many memorable tales from those contests, such as the two coldest Super Bowls on record and electrical issues resulting in a 34-minute stoppage during the last visit.

Multiple venues within the city have also hosted NFL championships. Tulane Stadium - which housed three of the first nine Super Bowls - is one of eight stadiums to host a Super Bowl no longer standing following its demolition in 1979-80. The Caesars Superdome has hosted the following seven matchups under its various names.

The Sugar Bowl Drive venue is also the site of Super Bowl 59.

New Orleans Super Bowl betting trends

Whereas most cities haven't hosted the Super Bowl enough to analyze betting trends, New Orleans is one of a few exceptions. Let's break down these patterns ahead of the Chiefs vs. Eagles matchup in Super Bowl 59.

Moneyline

Designated visitors have won seven times during New Orleans Super Bowls. The AFC and NFC have five wins apiece, with the former riding a two-game winning streak.

Since the games were moved into the Superdome, designated visitors have dominated, winning five of seven. The exceptions were the Green Bay Packers (Super Bowl 31) and New England Patriots (Super Bowl 36). The NFC holds a 4-3 edge indoors.

Overall, The Big Easy has led to unpredictable matchups, with favorites going 6-4 straight up. There has been some consistency for the team wearing white, though, as they hold a 7-3 record.

All of these trends bode well for Kansas City. The Chiefs are the designated visitors and they're wearing their white threads. They are also slight favorites at our best sports betting sites.

Lastly, Kansas City and Philadelphia have each played in a Super Bowl in New Orleans once. The Chiefs won their lone appearance (Super Bowl 4), whereas the Eagles fell to the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl 15.

Spread

If the Super Bowl odds close where they are - or even with minimal movement - it'll mark the smallest spread in New Orleans Super Bowl history (-1.5). That record is currently held by the Pittsburgh Steelers (Super Bowl 9) and Eagles (Super Bowl 15), who closed as field-goal favorites.

There have been some fairly large lines in these games with an average closing spread of 8.45 points. These have only increased as the games were moved inside, with the average point spread jumping up to 9.07 in seven games.

Those movements and spreads aren't without justification either, as the average margin of victory has been 18.2 points. Once again, there's a slight increase inside the Superdome, with the winning side capturing victory by an average of 19.2 points per contest.

The Paris of the South hasn't been kind to betting favorites. Teams that closed as expected winners are just 5-4-1 against the spread. The favorites' slight edge dissolves when pulling data only from games inside The Dome, as they're 3-3-1 ATS indoors.

Total

The total is the game line that's seen the largest variance throughout the Super Bowl's time in New Orleans.

The average Over/Under overall has been 41.8 points. This number drastically decreases when isolating the three outdoor games (35.33) from the seven indoor games (44.57). These trends remain consistent when discussing scoring:

  • Overall: 43.2 points per game
  • Indoors: 50.42 points per game
  • Outdoors: 26.33 points per game

It's worth noting the change in environment isn't the only reason for the uptick in scoring, although it undoubtedly plays a role. Average scoring in the NFL has increased from 19.3 points per game in 1970 (Super Bowl 4) to 23.5 PPG in 2013 (Super Bowl 47). This statistic sits at 22.9 throughout the current campaign.

Interestingly enough, the move to the Superdome has created some consistency with scoring.

Three of the seven games have finished with 37 total points scored, and the remaining four all finished with either 56 or 65 combined points. Overall, there have only been three unique combined scores in seven tries inside the Superdome. Keep this in mind when taking a flier on Super Bowl exact score predictions ahead of Super Bowl 59.

Super Bowls in New Orleans have leaned Under at a 6-4 clip. However, the Over has cashed more frequently since the venue change, hitting in four of seven tries.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Super Bowl betting results

Our Tulane Stadium vs. Caesars Superdome analysis from the sections above shows how various venues impact betting trends. As such, we wanted to take it a step further and analyze these patterns according to the stadium type from all past Super Bowls.

Thirty-six of the 58 Super Bowls have been played in open-air venues, whereas 22 were played in domes or closed-roof stadiums. A few caveats before diving into the numbers: there was no total set in Super Bowl 1, and the Super Bowl 49 spread was a pick 'em.

Statistics show us that closed-roof stadiums give underdogs a fighter's chance. Favorites are 13-8 (.619) straight up in domes, compared to open stadiums, where they are 24-12 (.667) throughout Super Bowl history. Favorites are 10-9-2 (.524) against the spread under roofs and an even 18-18 (.500) against the spread outdoors.

Weather conditions undoubtedly impact the scoring output, as well. Teams have combined to score 1,084 points in 22 games indoors (49.27 points per game) and 1,620 points in 36 games outdoors (45 PPG).

Our best sportsbooks have noticed these trends and adjusted the totals accordingly. Indoor totals average 47.7 points compared to 42.3 points outdoors. Lastly, closed-room games lean Over at a 12-10 clip, whereas the Under has cashed in 18 of 35 games with playable totals in open-air venues.
