Devils vs. Stars Prediction & Odds: Best Picks and NHL Player Props

An inconsistent New Jersey team faces the high-flying Dallas Stars on Tuesday, but there's reason to believe the Devils can upset the home favorites.

The New Jersey Devils have been more up and down than my toddler's mood, but there's reason to believe they can upset the high-flying Dallas Stars when they meet at American Airlines Center on Tuesday (8 p.m. ET, ESPN+).

While both teams are among the Stanley Cup odds favorites, the Stars are the much more deserving contender. They've won five in a row at home and are scoring goals at a faster rate than people buying toilet paper during a widespread crisis.

However, with Jacob Markstrom back, our Devils vs. Stars prediction analyzes the chances of New Jersey pulling off the upset.

🚨 Game pick: Devils ML (+152 via FanDuel) vs. Stars ⭐⭐⭐
🚨 My best player prop pick: Wyatt Johnston (+140 via bet365) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

My best Devils vs. Stars pick & score prediction

I'm predicting the Devils will beat the Stars in a game with six or fewer goals.

🏒 Devils ML ⭐⭐⭐

First, the Stars' moneyline odds (-184) are too short. Yes, there is value in the -125 odds on the 3-way moneyline, but there's a good chance this one could go to overtime. I also believe the Devils are in a prime spot to upset a Dallas team that has only lost three of its last 13 games.

While the Devils wouldn't be able to source consistency if it slapped them repetitively across the face, they don't require it to win one game. New Jersey has alternated wins and losses for the last 12 games. They lost to the Golden Knights 2-0 on Sunday, so according to that simple algorithm, it must mean a win is forthcoming, right?

While a nice thought, that's not why I'm backing the Devils. Markstrom made his long-awaited return to the crease against the Golden Knights, allowing two goals on 24 shots and finishing with 1.16 goals saved above expected.

I'd like to think Sheldon Keefe will return to Markstrom on Tuesday, especially as his ace netminder is 8-3-3 against the Stars. His goals-against average (3.14) against Dallas isn't the best, but he knows how to get Ws against Big D.

Finally, the Stars have been the best team in the league since Dec. 29 but didn't play well on Monday against the St. Louis Blues, who dominated proceedings but were undone by poor goaltending.

Tuesday represents a decent letdown spot for the Stars. New Jersey has been playing well enough defensively, even if Markstrom doesn't start. However, the likelihood of an upset will undoubtedly decrease if he is rested.

🎯 Final score prediction: Devils 4, Stars 2

The Devils were shut out on Monday in Las Vegas but have played well defensively lately. I expect them to get to Dallas early and hold on. That's why I'm predicting the Devils to win 4-2.

Correct score odds: +2700 via FanDuel (bet $10 to win $270)

💰 Wyatt Johnston 1+ assist ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Johnston is on a roll, scoring goals and setting up teammates like one of the league's elite, which by the way, he will be in a few years. Johnston scored a hat trick in the last game against the Blues and potted one in the previous game, too.

Before that he had an assist in four straight games, making it six in a row with at least a point. He has 14 points in the last 18 games. Of our best sportsbooks, bet365 offers the best price.

Best odds: +140 via bet365 (bet $10 to win $14)
