Hart Trophy odds: NHL MVP Betting Update Ahead of Draisaitl, McDavid vs. Hellebuyck

Last updated: March 19, 2025 11:11 AM EDT • 6 min read X Social Google News Link

If you like appetizers, we have on the menu tonight the most bougie amuse-bouche you'll likely find, featuring the Auston Matthews-led Toronto Maple Leafs and Nathan MacKinnon's Colorado Avalanche.
The former has about the same chance of winning the Hart Trophy as I do of using the word amuse-bouche twice more. While the latter, MacKinnon, is receiving the third-shortest Hart Trophy odds as we enter the season's final stretch.
Thursday's main course involves the neck-and-neck Hart Trophy odds favorites Leon Draisaitl and Connor Hellebuyck when the Winnipeg Jets land in Edmonton.
Without any further amuse-bouches, let's take a good look at the Hart Trophy odds betting update.

🔢 NHL Hart Trophy odds update
MacKinnon, Draisaitl, and Hellebuyck are racing down the final straight, with the rest of the chasing pack still looking to round the final corner.
Draisaitl's continuous demigod-like play has him atop the NHL MVP odds leaderboard, with his advantage increasing slightly over the last week.
While the Oilers' power forward is the odds-on favorite to win his second Hart Trophy, the runaway Vezina Trophy odds favorite is right in the thick of things and deserves special consideration for his unparalleled dominance over his goaltender counterparts.
Hellebuyck doesn't have somebody like Connor McDavid to rely on. Instead, he is often propelled into the eye of the storm, responsible for saving his teammates. His second-shortest odds have remained stable over the last week.
MacKinnon's odds have lengthened from +475, a curious development considering he's the leader of the league's hottest team and has the most points.
🏔️ Avalanche vs. 🍁 Maple Leafs: MacKinnon, Makar vs Matthews

Injuries and a lack of continuity have cost Matthews a place among those vying for hockey's most coveted individual regular-season honor.
And then there's Cale Makar, the minus-money Norris Trophy odds favorite. While he should win his second Norris Trophy, securing the Hart will be beyond him, at least this season.
MacKinnon, meanwhile, is the league's pacesetter in points, with 103 through 68 games. He has recently feasted on the Maple Leafs, which I outlined in our Avalanche vs. Maple Leafs prediction for tonight's contest.
The reigning Hart Trophy winner is tied with Nikita Kucherov for the most points per game (1.51), is tied with Draisaitl for the most even-strength points (70), has the second-most power-play points (33), the second-best plus-minus (+27), the most assists (76), and the most primary assists (47).
Despite those awe-inspiring statistics and unerring consistency, MacKinnon's +1000 odds at DraftKings, implying a 9.09% win probability, are well behind Hellebuyck and Draisaitl's. I backed MacKinnon as my best value 4 Nations Face-Off MVP and it paid off. That's not to say it will happen again, especially against two players enjoying once-in-a-lifetime seasons.
While voter fatigue will certainly hamstring his efforts to repeat, his odds are longer than they should be.

✈️ Jets vs. 🛢️ Oilers: Draisaitl, McDavid vs. Hellebuyck
Thursday's mouthwatering proposition between these Stanley Cup odds contenders starts at 9 p.m. ET from Rogers Place.
McDavid is amidst a 12-game point streak, in which he has notched 18. That's at least one point per game since Feb. 23. Despite his recent fruitful patch, the Oilers' captain has fallen off the pace where his odds are concerned. His recent minus-14 patch didn't help his cause.
His Robin, or should I say Batman, has been the best and mightiest version of Bruce Wayne. While his 18-game point streak ended Tuesday against Utah, Draisaitl is sauntering toward his first Rocket Richard Trophy. As the runaway Rocket Richard odds favorite, Draisaitl - one goal shy of 50 - leads second-place William Nylander by 11 goals.
The 29-year-old has 10 game-winning goals, one more than Kucherov and Mark Scheifele. Maybe most importantly, Draisaitl has 70 of his 101 points in the Oilers' 40 victories.
The case for Connor Hellebuyck
There is no player more important to his team than Hellebuyck. And no player has dominated his counterparts more. The Jets netminder leads pretty much every conceivable primary statistic, including wins (39), save percentage (.924), goals-against average (2.05), goals saved above expected (34.4), and shutouts (6).
If the voters can avoid the bright lights of the superstar offensive player and answer the call to pick the most valuable player, Helelbuyck is the guy. However, it's been 10 years since a goaltender was named the Hart Trophy recipient, and I'm not sure voters will step up the way Hellebuyck does every time he straps on the pads.
His +175 odds at our best sportsbooks imply a 36.36% win probability.
