Hurricanes vs. Devils Prediction, Odds & Expert Picks: NHL Player Props & Best Bets for Sunday, April 27

The New Jersey Devils have a litany of injuries to their defense as we offer our Hurricanes vs. Devils prediction and player props for Sunday's Game 4.

The New Jersey Devils avoided an 0-3 hole in their first-round series against the Carolina Hurricanes with a double-overtime victory on Friday.

While a resilient showing, New Jersey is dealing with multiple injuries to its defense, and our Hurricanes vs. Devils prediction, player props, and NHL picks expect the short turnaround will be too much for the home underdogs.

Sunday's game at Prudential Center starts at 3:30 p.m. ET (TBS, Sportsnet360.)

💡 Hurricanes vs. Devils prediction

Neither of these teams is playing elite offensive hockey right now. The Hurricanes, known for their relentless forecheck and high shot counts, managed just 28 shots on goal in Friday's 3-2 double-overtime loss after hitting the net 27 times in Game 2. Meanwhile, the Devils have been held to two regulation goals or less in seven of their last eight, a big reason they have one regulation-time win in their past 10.

Meanwhile, the heavily-favored Hurricanes continue to struggle on the road.

The Game 3 loss was their seventh straight defeat on the highway, dating back to the regular season. Their 16-21-5 mark as visitors is a significant drop off from the 33-19-1 record they posted at home.

However, Carolina still enjoys one significant advantage over the Devils in this series: its depth, especially on the blue line.

Already without Luke Hughes and Brenden Dillon, New Jersey lost defenseman Johnny Kovacevic to an undisclosed injury in the first period Friday, forcing the team to play the rest of the game with five D-men. Brian Dumoulin, Brett Pesce and Dougie Hamilton all saw more than 30 minutes in Game 3.

Sunday's afternoon start means those defensemen will have rested for just 40 hours before rinsing and repeating. In what should be another low-scoring game, I’m banking on fatigue being the difference as Carolina pulls out a rare road victory to regain control of this series.

🚨 Brian Dumoulin Over 1.5 blocked shots ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Dumoulin accounted for five of New Jersey’s 31 Game 3 blocked shots, giving him seven on the series.

With New Jersey’s top defensemen seeing extra minutes and Carolina likely to throw even more pucks on net in Game 4, look for Dumoulin to sacrifice his body again. Not all our best sports betting sites offer this prop, but I found -115 odds at bet365.

🚨 Shayne Gostisbehere Over 0.5 points ⭐⭐⭐

The Hurricanes’ power play was among the worst of those who made the playoffs, converting less than 19% of their opportunities during the season. However, Carolina’s power play has looked much sharper in this series, providing two goals in Game 2 and three in the last two games.

If Carolina’s success with the man advantage continues, there’s a good chance that Gostisbehere is at the heart of it. The veteran defenseman’s 27 power play points were a team-high, and he drew an assist on one of the Canes’ PP goals last game.

🚨 Timo Meier Under 0.5 points ⭐⭐⭐

In a series where the teams have combined for just 14 goals in three games, it’s hard to find many hot shooters to back. So, with the Devils likely to struggle offensively, I’d rather fade one of their slumping forwards.

Meier might be the most disappointing New Jersey forward in this series. After closing the regular season with four goals and two assists in his last six games, Meier has managed just one helper and a minus-2 rating through three postseason contests.

Meier has also struggled to produce in previous playoffs, averaging nearly half a point per game in 49 career postseason tilts. He shouldn’t be priced at nearly even odds to put up a point in Game 4. I found even money on Meier's Under 0.5 points at bet365, but you can also get -105 odds at BetMGM and DraftKings.
