Rangers vs. Penguins Prediction: Our Best Picks & Player Props for Today's NHL Game

The New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins were woeful in their first game back after the break, and our Rangers vs. Penguins prediction focuses on a glaring issue from Saturday's losses.

The Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers will want to erase Saturday's results from their collective memory, with both teams allowing eight goals in blowout losses.

Shockingly, the Pens and Rangers won the expected goal battle but were let down in epic fashion by their goaltenders, who would have been better off not showing up.

While the goaltending must be better at PPG Paints Arena on Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh (3:30 p.m. ET, TNT), I don't expect a low-scoring defensive battle, and our Rangers vs. Penguins prediction highlights why.

🚨 Game pick: Over 5.5 goals (-140 via Betway) vs. Penguins ⭐⭐⭐
🚨 My best player prop pick: Vincent Trocheck Over 2.5 shots (+140 via Betway) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

My best Rangers vs. Penguins pick & score prediction

I'm predicting the Rangers win 4-2, with six goals hitting the Over on the 5.5 goals total (-140).

🏒 Over 5.5 goals ⭐⭐⭐

Somebody on either team better remind their goaltenders the season has resumed, as Saturday's humiliations were primarily thanks to their woeful work. The Rangers lost 8-2 in Buffalo but won the expected goals battle 2.61 to 2.51.

Igor Shesterkin endured one of his worst starts as a professional, allowing five goals on 16 shots, finishing with -4.21 goals saved above expected in less than a period's work. Jonathan Quick wasn't much better. He conceded three goals on 17 shots in relief, finishing with -1.27 goals saved above expected.

I imagine Peter Laviolette will give Quick the nod, but who knows after that between-the-pipes abomination.

Pittsburgh's goaltending wasn't any better, with Alex Nedeljkovic stinking up the joint the most. Saturday's starter against the Washington Capitals allowed five goals on 14 shots, finishing with -3.65 goals saved above expected. The Caps scored four goals in less than eight minutes in the second period, chasing Nedeljkovic.

Joel Blomqvist was better off the bench, conceding three goals on 17 shots and finishing with a more respectable -0.65 goals saved above expected.

The Pens will almost assuredly start Blomqvist, given his superior performance.

There's no way the goaltending will be as rancid Sunday afternoon. However, I can't see any of the quartet playing at their peak level 24 hours later. It's the primary reason I'm leaning into the Over on 5.5. goals.

I don't expect the subpar goaltending to persist - especially in New York - but if it does, the Rangers won't improve their Stanley Cup odds anytime soon.

💰 Vincent Trocheck Over 2.5 shots ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Trocheck has been a productive shooter on the road for the Blueshirts, firing at least three on goal in nine of the last 11 games. He hit the Over in the previous two road games and is discernibly more productive in enemy rinks. The Pens allow the fourth-most shots per game on home ice (30.3), tied with the San Jose Sharks.

Meanwhile, the Rangers have the seventh-most shots per game on the road (29.5). There's not enough evidence to suggest the Pens' defense can effectively prevent Trocheck from testing whoever starts at least three times.

Best odds: +140 via Betway (bet $10 to win $14)
