Hoping to put the finishing touches on the Western Conference Final, the Edmonton Oilers host the Dallas Stars in Sunday's Game 6, and we have you covered with our Stars vs. Oilers predictions and expert picks based on the best NHL odds

The Edmonton Oilers are a victory from their first Stanley Cup Final appearance since 2006, but still have a ton of work in front of them. The Dallas Stars, 6-2 on the road during the playoffs, look to spoil the party in Edmonton after falling at home 3-1 in Dallas in Friday's Game 5.

The Stars won their first possible elimination game against the Vegas Golden Knights in the first round and look to extend the series on Sunday when they play at Rogers Place in Edmonton. The puck drops at 8 p.m. ET (TNT).

The Oilers, consensus favorites to win Game 6, also sit pretty in the Stanley Cup odds. Edmonton is 5-3 on home ice, and Dallas is 6-2 on the road in the 2024 playoffs.

Here are our best Stars vs. Oilers predictions and NHL picks (odds via our best NHL betting sites; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

Stars vs. Oilers predictions for Sunday

Under 5.5 goals ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Betting the Under in Edmonton goes against everything I've learned watching Oilers home games. However, this is more of a situational bet, befitting the magnitude and importance of the affair.

The Stars can't get into a shootout with the Oilers if they have any chance of extending the series to a seventh and deciding game. They are a playoffs' best 6-2 on the road for various reasons, none more crucial than their ability to shut up shop and play a sound and smothering defensive contest.

Both games in Edmonton hit the Over, but three of five overall featured five or fewer goals.

Before playing Edmonton, five of the six Stars' games in enemy rinks finished with five or fewer goals, including three in a row in Colorado and four consecutive overall.

Empty-net goals could scupper this bet, but considering a spot in the Stanley Cup Final is on the line, I'm willing to take that risk. The -115 odds represent a probability of 53.49%, and a winning $10 bet will profit $8.70.

Connor McDavid Over 3.5 shots ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Connor McDavid is on a shooting tear, shifting his pass-first mentality into a shoot-on-sight mantra. And it's working.

Usually confident in deferring to teammates in most situations, McDavid has taken matters into his own hands lately, which is an exciting and promising sign for the Oilers. He has at least four shots in three straight games and four of five in the Western Conference Final. The only exception was his one-shot outing in Game 2, which the Oilers lost.

This prop isn't devoid of potential banana peels, as McDavid hasn't fired at least four on goal in four straight since the playoffs started.

However, McDavid is more productive at home, where he's fired 29 shots on goal compared to 24 on the road. That's an average of 3.6 per game. McDavid has averaged 4.2 shots per game at Rogers Place since he decided to pass less and fire more.

The -105 odds imply a 51.22% probability, and a $10 bet pays a profit of $9.52 if it hits.

1st period Under 1.5 goals  ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Like McDavid and his epiphany to shoot more, I've adopted an Under mentality for Game 6.

Game 5 in Dallas is precisely how I think Game 6 in Edmonton will transpire, especially in the opening 20 minutes. A desperate Stars team should elicit their best defensive performance, and the same can be said for Jake Oettinger, who, more than any other Dallas player, will feel hard done by. His outstanding play between the pipes has kept the Stars within reach, and I expect nothing less than his spectacular best on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Oilers can't start like they did in Game 4 at home, when they conceded two goals early. Though they put together an impressive comeback to win the contest, replicating that feat in Game 6 would be a much taller task.

At -120, Betway's odd implies a winning probability of 54.55%. A $10 bet will garner a profit of $8.33 if it hits.
