Under ordinary circumstances, I'd back Bayern Munich to secure a narrow victory in the first leg. For all their defensive clout, Inter Milan aren't the same team in enemy environments, winning 11 times on the road in their last 27 Champions League games (seven draws and nine losses).

Meanwhile, Bayern are usually near-invincible in front of their vociferous supporters at Allianz Arena, where they've won 25 of the previous 31 Champions League contests, drawing five and losing once. That defeat came against PSG in a quarterfinal four years ago. 

Unfortunately for Bayern, Tuesday's first leg is grossly unordinary. Injuries have decimated Vincent Kompany's first 11, with several of the team's most influential players unavailable (Jamal Musiala, Dayot Upamecano, Alphonso Davies, and Aleksandar Pavlovic).

Bayern's ability to break down Inter's defense - which has allowed a paltry two goals in 10 Champions League matches - was largely predicated on the skill, speed, and trickery from Musiala and Davies. Their attack will be considerably more one-dimensional, with Harry Kane's impact magnified. 

They're also missing much of their starting backline, including central defender Upamecano. Kingsley Coman and Manuel Neuer are unlikely to feature, making matters worse. The loss of so many senior players will be felt, opening the door for Inter Milan to leave Bavaria with a share of the spoils.
