The Los Angeles Dodgers are the early favorites to repeat as champions based on the 2025 World Series odds, but the New York Mets are right behind them following their historic signing of superstar outfielder Juan Soto.

The Mets stole headlines on Sunday night when they signed Soto to a 15-year, $765-million deal, the most lucrative in baseball history. As a result, they're the second-biggest favorites to win the 2025 World Series.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles is coming off its first title since 2020 by defeating the New York Yankees 4-1 in the 2024 Fall Classic. L.A. jumped out to an early 3-0 series lead and closed it out in five games, thanks to the outstanding play of World Series MVP odds winner Freddie Freeman.

The Dodgers made early waves this offseason when they signed left-handed pitcher Blake Snell, bolstering what should already be an imposing rotation.

Just behind the Dodgers and Mets are Soto's former team, the New York Yankees.

Dodgers (+400)

The Dodgers just captured the 2024 World Series with half a starting rotation, and now they've signed left-hander Blake Snell to join a group of studs set to return from their various injuries.

With Snell, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow, and, of course, Shohei Ohtani making up perhaps the best No 1. through 4 in all of baseball, the Dodgers are truly terrifying.

Can Dodgers repeat?

A team hasn't repeated as World Series champions since the Yankees did so in 1999 and 2000 (after winning in 1998, too). So, can Los Angeles do what no other team has managed to solely in this millennium?

As previously mentioned, the Dodgers played this entire postseason with essentially an entire rotation on the injured list. With many of those players expected to return close to or for the start of the 2025 regular season, Los Angeles' pitching should feature none of the question marks it did entering this year's World Series.

Even though the Dodgers didn't land Soto, the fact that they were reportedly in the mix is a good sign that they're willing to add to the lineup during the offseason.

This could be a dynasty in the making with Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freeman all together for the next few years at least. So yes, the Dodgers can absolutely repeat.

Mets (+800)

The Mets went on an incredible second-half run during the 2024 campaign and looked like they were maybe one or two big pieces away from being true contenders. Well, there was no piece bigger than Soto.

One of baseball's best hitters (arguably the best) joins a lineup featuring perennial MLB MVP odds contender Francisco Lindor and rising star Mark Vientos to form a terrifying 1-3.

New York still needs to make other moves before I consider it a real challenge to the Dodgers - especially as L.A. makes additions of its own - but this is an excellent first step.

My World Series contender to watch

Padres (+1700)

I'm going with the same team I backed for much of the second half of this season, and the team that gave the Dodgers the greatest challenge during the playoffs.

The Padres were built for the postseason this year, and they might have gone all the way had they not forgotten how to hit in the NLDS.

San Diego features some key players who are set to become free agents, but the Padres should have no problem re-signing or replacing those players.

The Padres' rotation and bullpen is still loaded with talent, and they have a few interesting prospects they can call up, too.

How to read World Series futures

Every team is given World Series odds that shift throughout the season. Many factors can influence the movement of those numbers. A team's play is the most obvious, but injuries and transactions also contribute.

The top teams on the World Series futures oddsboard are deemed the most likely to win, with the opposite true for the bottom clubs. Bettors lock in wagers at current odds, and winning bets are paid out at the end of the season.

For example, a $10 bet at +1500 odds would pay out $150.

World Series spreads explained

Bettors can wager on the run line in each World Series game, just as they can throughout the regular season. For example, if one team is favored by -1.5 runs, that club needs to win by at least two runs for the wager to cash.

World Series moneyline odds explained

Teams involved in the World Series will get moneyline odds for both each game, and the series as a whole. The odds indicate which team is favored to win.

For example, if a team is a -120 favorite, that translates to a 54.6% probability of winning, and a $10 wager on that line would result in $8.33 in profit. Meanwhile, an underdog getting +115 odds is receiving a 46.5% chance to win, and the same wager would lead to an $11.50 win.
